La Soufrière (Saint Vincent)
La Soufrière is an active volcano forming the northern part of Saint Vincent in the Caribbean, the island's highest peak at about 1,234 metres. Its eruption of May 1902, a day before that of Mount Pelée on Martinique, killed about 1,600 people, many of them Kalinago and estate workers. Later eruptions in 1979 and 2021 forced large evacuations but caused few deaths.
