Lachine massacre
The Lachine massacre was a surprise attack by about 1,500 Iroquois warriors on the French settlement of Lachine, on the island of Montreal, on 5 August 1689. Dozens of settlers were killed and many more taken captive, and the raid spread terror across New France. It was a reprisal for the campaign of the governor, the Marquis de Denonville, against the Seneca in 1687, and it opened a decade of war between New France and the Iroquois.
