Letter of Majesty

1609 · 17th century

The Letter of Majesty was a charter issued in July 1609 by Rudolf II, as king of Bohemia, under pressure from the Protestant estates. It guaranteed freedom of religion to Protestants and Utraquists and allowed them to build churches and schools, with defenders elected to protect their rights. Disputes over its interpretation led to the Defenestration of Prague in 1618.
