Li Jinzhong

d. 696 · 7th century

Li Jinzhong was a Khitan chief who, with his brother-in-law Sun Wanrong, led a major revolt against the Tang empire under Wu Zetian in 696, after a famine and harsh treatment by the governor of Yingzhou. He took Yingzhou and proclaimed himself khagan, but died later that year. The revolt opened the way for Goguryeo refugees and Mohe tribes to move east and found Balhae.
