Liutprand, King of the Lombards

d. 744 · 8th century

Liutprand was king of the Lombards from 712 to 744 and the most powerful of their kings. He strengthened royal authority over the dukes of Spoleto and Benevento, added many laws to the Edict of Rothari and fought the Byzantines in central Italy. His gift of the town of Sutri to Pope Gregory II in 728 is regarded as the first step towards the Papal States.
