Edict of Rothari

643 · 7th century

The Edict of Rothari was the first written law code of the Lombards, issued by King Rothari at Pavia in November 643. Written in Latin, its 388 chapters set out Lombard customary law, including fixed money compensation for injuries in place of blood feud. Later kings such as Liutprand added to it, and it remained in use in Italy for centuries.
