Person
Aistulf
Aistulf was king of the Lombards from 749 to 756, previously duke of Friuli. In 751 he captured Ravenna, ending the Byzantine Exarchate, and then threatened Rome, which led Pope Stephen II to seek help from the Frankish king Pepin the Short. Pepin defeated Aistulf in 754 and 756 and forced him to give the former exarchate to the pope, the basis of the Papal States.
