Desiderius

Desiderius was the last king of the Lombards in Italy. His conflicts with the papacy led Pope Adrian I to appeal to Charlemagne, who besieged Pavia and conquered the Lombard kingdom in 774. The conquest brought northern Italy into the Carolingian Empire and strengthened the alliance between the Franks and the papacy.
