Pope Adrian I
Pope Adrian I was bishop of Rome from 772 to 795. Threatened by the Lombards, he appealed to Charlemagne for help. Charlemagne crossed the Alps, deposed King Desiderius and absorbed the Lombard kingdom in 774, strengthening the alliance between the papacy and the Carolingian Empire.
