Lü Jia

d. 111 BCE · 2nd century BCE

Lü Jia was chancellor of the kingdom of Nanyue in southern China, serving several of its kings over decades. In 112 BCE, opposing the plan of the queen dowager and the young king Zhao Xing to submit to the Han dynasty, he killed them and the Han envoys and enthroned Zhao Jiande. Emperor Wu of Han responded by invading, and in 111 BCE Han forces took the capital Panyu and captured Lü Jia, ending Nanyue's independence.
