Red River (Asia)
The Red River rises in Yunnan in China and flows south-east through northern Vietnam to the Gulf of Tonkin. Its fertile, flood-prone delta, where Hanoi stands, was the heartland of the earliest Vietnamese states and of later dynasties, which built great dikes to control it. French expeditions up the river in the 1870s and 1880s led to the protectorate of Tonkin.
