Thăng Long
Thăng Long, 'ascending dragon', was the capital founded by Lý Thái Tổ in 1010 on the Red River, on the site of modern Hanoi. It remained the seat of the Lý, Trần, Lê and Mạc dynasties and of the Trịnh lords for most of the next eight centuries. The Nguyễn moved the capital to Huế in 1802, and the city was renamed Hanoi in 1831.
