Lê Lợi

c. 1384–1433 · 15th century · Also known as Le Loi, Lê Thái Tổ, Le Thai To

Lê Lợi was a landowner from Lam Son in Thanh Hoa who led a ten-year war of resistance, from 1418, against the Ming occupation of Vietnam. After his victory at Chi Lang in 1427 the Ming withdrew, and in 1428 he proclaimed himself emperor as Lê Thái Tổ, founding the Later Le dynasty with its capital at Thang Long. Legend tells that he returned a magic sword to the turtle of Hanoi's Hoan Kiem Lake.
