Lucas Meyer

1846–1902 · 19th century

Lucas Meyer was a Boer leader who in 1884 led volunteers, among them the young Louis Botha, to back Dinuzulu in the Zulu civil war, in return claiming a large tract of Zululand. There they founded the Nieuwe Republiek with its capital at Vryheid, and Meyer served as its president until it joined the South African Republic in 1888. He later commanded Boer forces in Natal at the start of the Second Boer War.
