Luo Fangbo

1738–1795 · 18th century · Also known as Lo Fong Pak

Luo Fangbo was a Hakka scholar and migrant from Guangdong who organised Chinese gold miners in West Borneo. In 1777 he founded the Lanfang kongsi at Mandor near Pontianak, a self-governing community of miners with elected leaders, sometimes called the first republic in Asia. Allied with the Pontianak Sultanate, it lasted until Dutch annexation in 1884.
