Luther Bible

1522–1534 · 16th century · Also known as Luther's Bible

The Luther Bible is Martin Luther's translation of the Bible into German, from the Hebrew and Greek, with the New Testament published in 1522 and the complete Bible in 1534. Widely printed and read, it shaped the standard written German language and served as the main Bible of Lutheran churches. Its success encouraged other vernacular translations, including the Zürich Bible.
