Mandala (political model)
The mandala political model is a scholarly concept describing states in pre-modern South-East Asia as circles of power radiating from a central ruler. Authority weakened with distance, and outlying rulers shifted allegiance among centres. The concept is used to explain how Srivijaya held together a loose network of ports and tributaries.
