Mandal Commission
The Mandal Commission was a body set up by the Janata government of India in 1979 under B. P. Mandal to identify the socially and educationally backward classes. Its report of 1980 recommended reserving 27 per cent of central government jobs and places in public universities for Other Backward Classes. The decision of V. P. Singh's government to implement it in 1990 provoked violent protests and reshaped Indian caste politics.
