Scheduled Castes

Scheduled Castes is the official term in India for the communities historically subjected to untouchability, listed in a schedule under the constitution. The constitution of 1950, drafted under B. R. Ambedkar, abolished untouchability and reserved seats in legislatures and places in education and public employment for them. They make up about a sixth of India's population, and many use the self-chosen name Dalit.
