Scheduled Tribes
Scheduled Tribes is the official designation in India for indigenous communities, often called Adivasis, listed under the constitution of 1950. Like the Scheduled Castes, they receive reserved seats in legislatures and reserved places in education and public employment, and areas where they predominate enjoy special protection under the Fifth and Sixth Schedules. They made up about 8.6 per cent of India's population at the census of 2011.
