Manipular legion
The manipular legion was the organisation of the Roman army of the middle Republic, in which the legion was divided into small, flexible units called maniples. This structure gave Roman armies greater tactical flexibility than the Macedonian phalanx. It proved its superiority against Hellenistic armies, including those of the Seleucid Empire, and was later replaced by the cohort system.
