Mano people

The Mano are a Mande-speaking people of north-central Liberia and the neighbouring forest region of Guinea, living mainly in Nimba County. Traditionally rice farmers, they are known for their masks and for the Poro society, which shaped male initiation and authority. In Liberia they were among the indigenous peoples long excluded from power by the Americo-Liberian elite, and they suffered heavily in the civil wars of 1989–2003.
