Manuel da Nóbrega

1517–1570 · 16th century

Manuel da Nóbrega was a Portuguese Jesuit who led the first Jesuit mission to Brazil, arriving with the governor-general Tomé de Sousa in 1549. He organised missions among the indigenous peoples, opposed their enslavement and in 1554, with José de Anchieta, founded the college from which São Paulo grew. He also helped negotiate peace with the Tamoio in 1563.
