Person
Maria Montessori
Maria Montessori was an Italian physician and educator who developed the Montessori method of teaching. She opened her first Casa dei Bambini (Children's House) in a working-class district of Rome in 1907, basing it on children's self-directed activity with specially designed materials. Her method spread worldwide; she left Fascist Italy in the 1930s and spent her later years in India and the Netherlands.
