Mariano Melgarejo

1820–1871 · 19th century

Mariano Melgarejo was a Bolivian general who seized power in 1864 and ruled as president until 1871. His erratic rule became a byword for caudillo misgovernment: he decreed the sale of indigenous communal lands, provoking revolts, and signed treaties that conceded territory and rights to Chile and Brazil. Overthrown in January 1871, he fled to Peru and was killed in Lima later that year.
