Marikana massacre
The Marikana massacre took place on 16 August 2012 near the Lonmin platinum mine at Marikana in North West Province, South Africa, when police opened fire on striking miners, killing 34. Ten people, including police officers, had been killed in the preceding days. It was the deadliest use of force by South African security forces since the end of apartheid, and a commission of inquiry criticised the police.
