Marquis Yi of Zeng

d. c. 433 BCE · 5th century BCE · Also known as Zeng Hou Yi

Marquis Yi of Zeng was a ruler of the small Zhou state of Zeng, identified with Sui, in present-day Hubei. His tomb at Leigudun near Suizhou, excavated in 1978, held a set of 65 bronze bells, lacquerware, weapons and bamboo-slip writings. The bells, still playable, are among the most important finds for the history of Chinese music.
