Martín Miguel de Güemes

1785–1821 · 19th century

Martín Miguel de Güemes was an Argentine military leader and governor of Salta from 1815 to 1821. With gaucho guerrilla forces he defended the northern frontier of the United Provinces of the Río de la Plata against repeated royalist invasions from Upper Peru, allowing José de San Martín to prepare his campaign across the Andes. He died of a gunshot wound received during a royalist raid on Salta in June 1821.
