Salta
Salta is a city in north-western Argentina, capital of Salta Province, in the Lerma valley. Founded in 1582 by Hernando de Lerma, it grew as a market for the mules sent to the silver mines of Potosí. During the wars of independence it was the base of Martín Miguel de Güemes, whose gaucho forces held off royalist invasions from Upper Peru.
