Unitarian League

1830 CE – 1831 CE · capital Córdoba

An alliance of nine Argentine interior provinces under General José María Paz, defeated by the federalists in 1831.

Origins

During the civil wars between Unitarians, who wanted a centralised Argentina, and Federalists, General José María Paz took control of Córdoba in 1829. He defeated the federal caudillo Juan Facundo Quiroga at La Tablada in 1829 and Oncativo in 1830, and in 1830 the interior provinces formed the League of the Interior with Paz as Supreme Military Chief.

Rule and society

The league joined nine provinces, including Córdoba, Tucumán, Salta, Mendoza and San Juan, under Unitarian governors installed with Paz's backing. It was mainly a military alliance. In response, Buenos Aires, Santa Fe and Entre Ríos signed the Federal Pact in January 1831.

Decline and legacy

In May 1831 Paz was captured when soldiers of Estanislao López brought down his horse with boleadoras. Quiroga defeated the Unitarians at La Ciudadela near Tucumán in November 1831, and the provinces joined the Federal Pact, forming the Argentine Confederation.
