Upper Peru

Also known as Charcas

Upper Peru was the name of the highland territory of the Royal Audiencia of Charcas in the Spanish empire, corresponding roughly to modern Bolivia. Rich in silver from Potosí, it belonged to the Viceroyalty of Peru until 1776 and then to the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata. It declared independence in 1825 as the Republic of Bolivia.
