The Upper Rhenish Circle was one of the Imperial Circles of the Holy Roman Empire, created in 1500 to organise defence, taxation and the keeping of the peace. It grouped many small territories along the middle and upper Rhine and in Hesse, including Hesse-Kassel, Hesse-Darmstadt, the Nassau and Hanau counties and the bishoprics of Worms, Speyer and Strasbourg. It ended with the Empire in 1806.
