Massachusetts Bay Company

1628–1684 · 17th century

The Massachusetts Bay Company was an English joint-stock company chartered by Charles I in 1629 to settle and trade in New England. Its Puritan leaders, headed by John Winthrop, took the charter with them to America in 1630, turning the company into the government of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. The charter was revoked by the English courts in 1684.
