Massachusetts Government Act

1774 · 18th century

The Massachusetts Government Act was one of the Intolerable Acts passed by the British Parliament in 1774 in response to the Boston Tea Party. It annulled key parts of the colony's charter of 1691, making the council appointed by the Crown and restricting town meetings. Resistance to its enforcement by the new governor, General Thomas Gage, led towards the outbreak of war in 1775.
