Massacre of Najran

523 · 6th century · Also known as Martyrs of Najran

The Massacre of Najran was the killing of the Christian community of Najran, in south-western Arabia, in 523 by the Himyarite king Yusuf As'ar Yath'ar, known in Arab tradition as Dhu Nuwas, who had adopted Judaism. Reports of the martyrs reached Byzantium and Aksum, and in 525 King Kaleb of Aksum crossed the Red Sea, overthrew Yusuf and installed a Christian viceroy.
