Abraha

6th century · 6th century

Abraha was an Aksumite general who seized power in Himyar, in Yemen, in the 530s and ruled it, nominally as a vassal of Aksum, until about 570. He built a great church at Sanaa and repaired the Marib dam, recording his deeds in inscriptions. Islamic tradition credits him with an expedition against Mecca with elephants, remembered in the Qur'an's Surah al-Fil.
