Media Atropatene

Media Atropatene was a kingdom in north-western Iran, roughly corresponding to present-day Iranian Azerbaijan. It was founded by Atropates after Alexander the Great's conquest and remained largely independent of the Seleucid Empire. Its name is the origin of the regional name Azerbaijan.
