Mindaugas

c. 1203–1263 · 13th century

Mindaugas was the first known Grand Duke of Lithuania and its only crowned king. Having united the Lithuanian lands by the 1240s, he accepted Catholic baptism in 1251 to divide his enemies and, with Pope Innocent IV's approval, was crowned king in 1253. He later broke with the Livonian Order and was assassinated by rival relatives in 1263, after which the kingdom lapsed.
