Mirabal sisters

The Mirabal sisters, Patria, Minerva and María Teresa Mirabal, were Dominican political activists who opposed the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo. Members of the clandestine 14 June Movement, they were murdered on Trujillo's orders on 25 November 1960, and their deaths increased opposition to his regime. The anniversary is marked by the United Nations as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
