Parsley Massacre
The Parsley Massacre was the killing of thousands of Haitians and Dominicans of Haitian descent in the Dominican borderlands in October 1937, on the orders of the dictator Rafael Trujillo. Soldiers reportedly identified victims by asking them to pronounce perejil, the Spanish word for parsley. Estimates of the dead range from about 12,000 to more than 20,000.
