Moengo
Moengo is a town on the Cottica River in eastern Suriname, built as a company town for bauxite mining by Suralco, the Surinamese subsidiary of Alcoa, which developed the deposits from the late 1910s. For decades it was a centre of the industry that dominated the Surinamese economy. It suffered heavy damage in the interior war of 1986 to 1992 and large-scale mining there has since ended.
