Moesia
Moesia was a Roman province south of the lower Danube, covering parts of modern Serbia, North Macedonia, Bulgaria and Romania, named after the Thracian Moesi. Conquered after the campaigns of Marcus Licinius Crassus in 29 BCE and organised early in the 1st century CE, it was divided in 86 into Upper and Lower Moesia. Its legionary fortresses guarded the Danube frontier, and from the 7th century Slavs and then Bulgars settled the region.
