Mohammad Zahir Shah
Mohammad Zahir Shah was the last king of Afghanistan, reigning from 1933, after the assassination of his father Mohammad Nadir Shah, until 1973. For two decades power lay with his uncles and then his cousin Mohammad Daoud Khan, but the 1964 constitution introduced a parliamentary system. Daoud overthrew him in 1973 while he was in Italy; he returned in 2002 and was honoured as Father of the Nation.
