Molière, the stage name of Jean-Baptiste Poquelin, was a French playwright and actor, regarded as the greatest master of French comedy. Supported by Louis XIV, his company performed at court and in Paris. His plays, among them Tartuffe, The Misanthrope, The Miser and The Imaginary Invalid, satirised hypocrisy, pretension and the professions, and Tartuffe was banned for several years after protests by the clergy.
