Mona Passage
The Mona Passage is the strait between Hispaniola and Puerto Rico, linking the Atlantic Ocean with the Caribbean Sea. About 130 km wide and broken by the islands of Mona, Monito and Desecheo, it was crossed by Taíno canoes long before Spanish contact, connecting the chiefdom of Higüey in eastern Hispaniola with Puerto Rico, and later became an important shipping route.
