Mutsamudu is the capital of the island of Anjouan in the Comoros and the country's second-largest town. Founded in the 15th century, it became the seat of the Anjouan sultans, with a stone medina, palaces and a citadel built in the late 18th century above its harbour. It was a regular port of call for ships on the route to India.
