Mutsu Munemitsu

1844–1897 · 19th century

Mutsu Munemitsu was a Japanese statesman from the Kii domain who served as foreign minister from 1892 to 1896. He negotiated the Anglo-Japanese Treaty of Commerce and Navigation of 1894, which ended British extraterritoriality in Japan, and with Itō Hirobumi concluded the Treaty of Shimonoseki after the First Sino-Japanese War. His memoir Kenkenroku recounts the diplomacy of that war.
