Mutsu Province

Also known as Michinoku

Mutsu Province was an old province of Japan covering most of northern Honshu, the largest in the country. Long a frontier land of the Emishi, it was the setting for the 11th-century wars of the Abe and Kiyohara and for the rule of the Northern Fujiwara from Hiraizumi. Under the Tokugawa it was divided among domains such as Sendai and Morioka, and it was split into five provinces in 1868.
