Fujiwara no Motohira
Fujiwara no Motohira was the second lord of the Northern Fujiwara, who ruled Mutsu and Dewa in northern Japan from Hiraizumi. The son of Kiyohira, he succeeded after a struggle with his brother in 1128 and maintained the family's largely independent power while acknowledging the court in Kyoto. He began the great temple of Mōtsū-ji, and his remains lie in the Golden Hall of Chūson-ji.
