Hiraizumi

Hiraizumi is a town in Iwate prefecture in northern Honshu, Japan. In the 12th century it was the seat of the Northern Fujiwara, who ruled Mutsu and Dewa and, with gold from the region, made it a rich cultural centre rivalling Kyoto. Minamoto no Yoritomo destroyed the family in 1189. Its temples and gardens, including Chūson-ji and Mōtsū-ji, became a World Heritage Site in 2011.
